Dieter Rams' iconic Braun calculator, rebuilt in Figma in three styles, then brought to life with AI so you can actually use it.
A design challenge from Designlab's UI Mastery Certification asked us to recreate a classic calculator interface in three styles: realistic, subtle, and flat. I chose Dieter Rams' iconic Braun calculator, where every proportion, color, and button shape had to stay true to the original.
I built it in Figma, with every button as a component in three states: default, hover, and active.
Then I went beyond the assignment, using Figma Make to turn the prototype into a fully functional calculator.
Figma Make was fun to work with, but it struggled to read the interface correctly. Its first attempt ignored my design and produced a generic calculator; after many rounds of prompting and button-by-button descriptions, the AI finally recognized Rams' aesthetic.
It started as a design exercise and ended as a crash course in AI tool troubleshooting.
