Cuboctahedron

Building a Shared Legacy from Fourteen Words

2026

My final piece for Neville Brody's "Design Without" masterclass at the Royal College of Art in London: one word from each of the 14 participants, held inside a single balsa wood form.

For the final assignment, each of us wrote a brief, placed it in a box, and drew one at random. Mine asked: Who are you? What are you? What do you take from this week? How do you apply this to you personally, to others, and in practice? How do you want to be seen?

I answered through the group itself. I asked each participant for one word that describes them, the legacy they want to leave, or their superpower.

I wrote each word on a balsa wood panel: 6 squares for stability and 8 triangles for movement, 14 faces for the 14 members of our cohort.

Assembled, the panels formed a cuboctahedron: each participant's word on the inside, backed on the outside by an image of a designer or artist who has inspired their career. By its nature, the form connects us, symbolizing universal unity and infinite potential.

All people bring a lesson to your life, if you choose to see it that way. In each participant, I found a piece of the puzzle that completes me.

The week reminded me to trust the process and confirmed that the best ideas live outside my comfort zone. Failure became an opportunity for refinement.

How do I want to be seen? As a contributor, a creative energy force.
